Interview: Up Close and Personal with Don Salaudin

Welcome to Can you tell us your feelings and expectations of being featured here on
Don: I am excited and honoured to be featured here as a trainer.
How did you hear about us?
Don: I came across this site while searching for fitness opportunities online.
Please tell us a little bit of your background and how you got involved in fitness.

Don: Actually, it was a total accident. Frankly speaking, I’ve never thought of becoming a Personal Trainer at all. 14 years ago, after my National Service, I was doing some modeling work promoting casual wear for some small companies in order to earn some extra bucks. Since my income was not sufficient, I was always looking through the papers for new opportunities when I came across the Manhunt Contest in 2001. Well, even though I didn’t have a nice body at that time, I took part in it simply for more exposure for myself. And guess what? I was one of the finalists and even won an award – which was so unbelievable!

After the 4-month contest, I took a 2-week break and started looking for work opportunities again. I happened to be traveling along Orchard Road in a bus towards home after a job interview. I passed by California Fitness Orchard and something struck me to turn back and take a second glimpse at it. I had a strong feeling that I should just try my luck and see if something could work out. The next day, I went there for an interview with my tie on. Many people recognized me from the Manhunt contest. Wow! That was a great feeling! Interview was done, and I started work immediately the following week. That was how I got involved in the fitness industry. Now it has become my passion – a passion which I’ve always thought not possible.

What's the best thing about being a Fitness Professional?
Don: The whole works – walking the talk, building discipline, having dedication, following sound nutrition, working-out, feeling energetic and looking good.
What's the worst thing then about being a Fitness Professional?
Don: The pressure and stress of always having to set an example for others to follow.
Can you tell us more about your fitness philosophy?
Don: I believe that Fitness is one of the most important things in life that you shouldn’t compromise on with anything else – at all times. No matter what, you have to put aside at least 3-hours a week minimum, without fail, in order to have a healthier & stronger you. Yes, work comes first, I’m not denying the fact, but I’m not telling you to compromise your health with wealth. At the end of the day, what is Wealth without Health, think about it…..
Where do you see yourself in 5 or 10 years down the road?

Don: Now that the demand for "Fitness at your Doorstep" has been increasing over the years, I’ve decided to serve the community with pride with my vigorously selected team. My goal is to get together the best personal trainers in Singapore to form a team, that would serve anyone who is interested in transforming their lives through fitness.

Is there anything else you like to share?

Don: I believe that finding a personal trainer who makes you feel comfortable enough to be yourself can be most challenging. But we’re called “personal” trainers for a reason — we’re here to guide you to your personal fitness goals, and to do so, we need to fit with your personality. Here are qualities that I personally look for in my own team of trainers:

1. Patience

Patience is the key to a good client-trainer relationship. Trainers should understand that what works for one client may not work for another. He or she should do an assessment of your body when you first meet-up to familiarize themselves with your needs. Trainers should also coach at a pace suitable for each of their clients. Some clients may progress at a faster rate, while others may require more coaching and assistance.

2. Communication

It's the tool to success. That said, trainers should be able to explain things clearly to you at all times and even coach you on how to do certain moves without physically being present - eg: while on the phone.

3. Professionalism

While it’s important to maintain a close relationship with a client, a trainer always needs to maintain a high level of professionalism.

4. Education

Trainers should have — and be able to show you — an appropriate fitness certification for their area of expertise. To become certified, personal trainers must pass an exam through accredited organizations such as the American Council on Exercise (ACE), the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) or the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). Most exams cover exercise physiology, training and exercise procedures, nutrition, functional anatomy of the body and weight management. Each organization’s certification exam may focus on different disciplines and areas. Trainers should also stay up-to-date with the latest fitness trends and research published in scientific journals.

5. Personality

As a client, you want to feel comfortable and assured that your trainer has your best interests in mind.

Once you have established the kind of personal trainer you want, you can start looking for him/her.

How does one contact you if he/she is interested in your services?
Don: You may contact me via any of the following means: my website at, my email at or my mobile at (+65) 91081781
